Dear Families and Community Members:

Although the Governor extended the Shelter in Place today, there was no direct change for BCPS. We appreciate your continued support of Byron Center Public Schools over the last few weeks. This is an unprecedented time, and we are truly thankful that we have been able to work together in supporting all in Byron Center.

The May 5 Bond Proposal is approaching quickly. We continue to plan for the future and answer questions that the community has about this important long-range growth plan for BC. Linked here are video messages from Nickels Principal Tom Trout and Countryside Elementary Principal Jo Dobson. For the safety of all, we ask that everyone vote absentee to honor the Shelter in Place Order from the State of Michigan. As always, if you have questions, please contact me directly.

We continue to find success in students connecting with their teachers through our distance learning plan. We have been able to distribute Chromebooks to students who are in need, and staff has been able to create and support meaningful educational opportunities in daily lessons. In response to requests for internet options, the district has installed exterior Wi-Fi areas in the parking lots of Countryside Elementary and Nickels Intermediate. Please feel free to use those areas for downloading materials or staying connected with teachers, staff, and BCPS.

The school year will officially end on June 5 as scheduled. The Michigan Department of Education approved our distance learning plan which has allowed the district to move forward with our regular calendar. We have set the date of July 27 for our High School Graduation Ceremony. High School Principal Scott Joseph is working closely with student leadership for other senior celebrations as well. The high school will continue to update parents and students.

Congratulations to all BC students and staff. With a passion for learning and the effort put in each day, BCHS is ranked 27th in the State out of 1,870 high schools. This starts with our preschool program and builds through the years to this achievement of success. Congrats to all of BC for this wonderful accomplishment.

As you know, BCPS has a great sense of community. We have seen that in many ways during this time. Please continue to support one another, and if there is a particular way that we can help, please do not hesitate to ask.

We are the Bulldogs! We are BC Strong! Sincerely,

Kevin Macina, Ph.D. Superintendent
