Hello Byron Center Community,
I hope this letter finds you safe and doing well this summer. I hope that you have been able to spend time with family and continue to be healthy during these uncertain times.
On June 30, the Governor issued Executive Order 2020-142, which requires all school districts to provide Safe Start Plans for reopening schools in the fall. Since my last communication, BCPS has created Guiding Coalition Teams to examine options for the start of school that involve instructional areas of students returning and safety precautions for students, staff, and families.
The Return to Learn Roadmap is dependent on the current phase of the State of Michigan. The Governor determines which phase the state is in, and the state phase requirements are mandatory. Under Phases 1-3, all school buildings are closed, with athletic and school activities canceled. All in-person teaching must cease, and learning will continue through remote instruction. Phase 4 allows for in-person instruction to be offered with required safety protocols for hygiene, cleaning, athletics, food service, and bussing. Under Phase 5, most requirements from Phase 4 become recommendations allowing for flexibility in safety plans to meet the needs of the district.
Currently, the State of Michigan is in Phase 4; we plan for the return of students in person. BCPS is preparing for if the state moves back to Phase 3 or ahead to Phase 5. We are focusing our efforts on the various offerings for school in the fall:
In-Person Learning (Phases 4, 5, & 6, currently in Phase 4)
•Traditional learning instruction with a focus on health and safety protocols from the Return to Learn Roadmap while students are in school and participating in school activities.
Remote Learning (Phases 1-6)
•The State of Michigan or Kent County Health Department may require a classroom, building, or district to close for a time due to COVID-19. Content and course work will be a continuation of classroom instruction from a distance learning platform.
BC Virtual (Phases 1-6)
•Otional, full-time online learning for families more comfortable keeping their children home from school. Students enroll in a BCPS full-time semester schedule of coursework, delivered virtually with no in-person instruction.
We could use your help and input as BCPS continues to plan the fine details of students returning to school on Monday, August 31. The Return to Learn Survey linked below is your opportunity to provide BCPS with input for the start of school. Your contribution is valuable and helps create the most authentic and appropriate learning experience for your student. Please complete the survey by Monday at 5:00 pm.
Thank you for your patience as the BCPS staff continues to work through the details for the start of school. To keep our commitment to high standards in BC, it takes time to create high-level learning and safety protocols. The community support has been amazing through the summer months. We are having very successful programs at Room to Bloom and Bulldog Power because staff, parents, and students have worked together to make it happen. Your support is noticed and shows commitment to prepare for a successful return to learning in the fall.
Please continue to be healthy and stay well! We are the Bulldogs!
