Proposed Athletic Projects

The November bond proposal would impact every school in the district, addressing academics, arts and athletics from early childhood through high school.

As Byron Center athletic programs grow, there are concerns about whether the district has adequate space for student-athletes to practice and compete. The bond proposal would build new fields at the West Athletic Complex to accommodate the district's growing sports programs.

New Stadium

Build a new stadium at the West Athletic Complex, providing the district with a third turf field. This would give Byron Center athletic programs additional space to practice and host competitions.

  • Capacity Concerns: The new stadium would alleviate overcrowding and cramped parking during Friday night football games at the district's current stadium, Waddell Field.
  • Unsuitable for Development: The district is unable to expand its current stadium, Waddell Field, due to an easement that runs through the field, making it unsuitable for development.
  • Waddell Field Remains in Use: Waddell Field would still be used for track, marching band practice and multipurpose activities across the district.

Baseball & Softball Fields

Build two turf and two natural grass baseball and softball fields at the West Athletic Complex.

  • Turf Fields: New turf fields would help eliminate the many delays or cancellations Byron Center sports teams experience throughout the spring season due to poor drainage at the current fields.
  • Unsuitable for Development: The new fields would replace the current fields on the district's central campus that are unable to be developed because they are built on unsuitable soil.
  • Press Boxes: Add press boxes to the baseball and softball fields, making it easier to host postseason competitions.

Facility Enhancements

Enhancing Byron Center's athletic facilities would give the district the ability to host more postseason competitions in the future.

  • Soccer Facility Upgrades: Install additional seating and a press box at the district's existing soccer field at the West Athletic Complex.
  • Expand Parking: Expand parking at the West Athletic Complex to support the new fields and at Waddell Field to accommodate track and other events.
