North Star Academy
North Star Academy (NSA) is a personalized, blended-education program at Byron Center High School (BCHS) designed to prepare students for their individual plan after high school, while completing graduation requirements and receiving a BCHS diploma.
For some students, success does not look like a traditional classroom for six periods a day. Some students need a different pace, more flexibility or simply a different learning environment where they feel understood and listened too.
At BCHS, NSA provides that environment. It’s a chance for kids to be part of something different while still being part of the school community.
NSA's class of 2026 was the 17th graduating class of this program!
How does North Star differ from a traditional general education setting?
North Star helps students rebuild their learning and earn credits in the most logical sequence, with additional support tailored to their individual needs. Instead of juggling six classes at once, students can focus on one or two courses at a time, allowing them to build confidence and experience success. Along the way, students develop structure, accountability and essential skills, not just face consequences for falling behind.
What opportunities are available to North Star students?
North Star Academy students are Byron Center High School students. They have access to all the same opportunities as their peers, including transportation, electives, fine arts, athletics, dances, graduation and the Kent Career Tech Center (KCTC). The only difference is how they learn. North Star students attend school at Byron Center High School, just in a different classroom and through a different learning model.
How are North Star students supported by staff?
North Star is staffed by five certified teachers, two paraeducators and one administrator who are deeply invested in each student's success. Through strong relationships, they help students build character, social awareness and employability skills that prepare them for life beyond high school. With more one-on-one and small-group instruction, flexible pacing, intentional transitions and built-in supports, North Star provides an environment where students can thrive.
What is the admissions process for North Star Academy?
Admission to North Star Academy is not automatic, as we thoughtfully consider whether the program is the right fit for each student. Because enrollment is limited, interested students complete an application process that allows our team to get to know them, understand their needs and determine whether North Star's unique learning model will best support their success.
What opportunities do North Star students have to earn rewards for their progress?
North Star also has a bonus system that encourages students to stay engaged, make consistent progress and take ownership of their learning. Each week, students meet with a teacher to review their progress toward personalized goals. As students meet expectations for academic progress, attendance and engagement, they can earn incentives that include greater schedule flexibility, additional time off and other in-class rewards.
What does current and former North Star Academy students have to say about the program?
Scarlett, NSA Graduate
I think North Star is a space for everyone. I think no matter what you struggle with in the normal school stream, you’re going to figure it out in North Star. In North Star, it’s a family and you feel like you belong.
When I got invited to come into NSA, they cared about me as a person and they wanted to see me succeed.
Walker, NSA Graduate
Sophomore year I started failing classes and I was worried I wasn’t going to graduate so I looked into North Star and saw all of the options they offer and different paths that you can take.
The most influential part of North Star for me was the flexibility and the teachers. There’s a lot you can do. If you’re on track, you can be at home and still do work, you can obviously be at school and do work and you can go ahead and overdue it and graduate early.
Mya, NSA Graduate
When I got into North Star, I could go at my own pace, if I wasn’t paying attention, I could go back and watch stuff and also we had a very good support system with all the teachers.

You can pick the classes you want to focus on, focus on those classes, finish them first. It’s not as stressful as a six period day, having to worry about all six classes.
